Search, the business that pays for everything else at Google, missed. Now the stock is testing a record nobody wanted.

Why is Alphabet stock down today? Because Google Search came in light while AI spending kept climbing. Search revenue was $63.35 billion against a $64.96 billion estimate (CNBC), profit missed, and cash burn from AI spending surged (Reuters). Alphabet (GOOGL) was at 287.51 premarket, down about 11.5% from Wednesday's 324.89 close (Yahoo Finance, 5:48 AM PT). Reuters says the company is on track to shed more than $400 billion in market value if the losses hold.

Here is the record in play: according to Bespoke Investment Group, Alphabet has never fallen more than 10% on an earnings day. Premarket says it will. The 1:00 PM PT close decides it.

Why is Alphabet stock down today? The search miss in three numbers

  • Search: $63.35 billion vs. $64.96 billion expected (CNBC). Search is the profit engine that funds Google's AI build, so a miss there lands harder than a miss anywhere else.
  • Free cash flow: negative $9.07 billion for the quarter, against an expected burn of only $36 million (Reuters, LSEG), as capital spending ran ahead of operating cash flow. We covered the full report in our after-hours explainer.
  • Google Cloud more than doubled to $30.71 billion and beat estimates. The market looked past it. It is grading the core business and the cash bill, not the growth story.

The scale is the story. A drop of about 11.5% from a 324.89 close takes Alphabet toward the $400 billion-plus loss Reuters described if the drop holds through the close.

Microsoft up, Alphabet down: the AI spending split

Microsoft (MSFT) was at 540.94 premarket, up 1.9% (Yahoo Finance, 5:48 AM PT). It beat on revenue and profit, Azure grew faster than expected, and cash flow beat by a wide margin (Reuters). Both companies are spending heavily on AI. The market is rewarding the one still funding the build from its own cash flow and punishing the one burning cash while its core business slows.

The AI build trade is wobbling beyond Google. Caterpillar (CAT) was down 11.3% premarket at 632.69 even after beating estimates and posting a record $78.1 billion backlog (Reuters), because it did not raise its full-year outlook and investors worry about data-center demand. Samsung's profit miss and higher spending plan hit chips in Seoul (Investing.com). Amazon (AMZN) was down 2.6% at 247.94 ahead of its report after today's close.

This morning's data: Q3 GDP, PCE inflation and jobless claims

The 5:30 AM PT reports said the economy is running hot and inflation is not getting worse, which is not the mix that rescues a tech selloff, but not one that adds to it either:

  • Q3 GDP (advance): up 3.4% annualized vs. 3.1% expected (Dow Jones estimate), after 2.2% in Q2 (CNBC, AP).
  • September PCE prices: up 0.5% for the month (in line) and 3.6% from a year earlier, 0.1 point below consensus (Aug. 3.4%).
  • Core PCE: up 0.3% for the month and 3.1% from a year earlier, both in line (Aug. 3.0%).
  • Initial jobless claims: 194,000 vs. 198,000 expected, prior 195,000 (week ended Oct. 24).

No upside inflation surprise meant the bond market relaxed a little. The 10-year Treasury yield was 5.028% at 5:48 AM PT (Yahoo Finance), down from a 5.045% close Wednesday. It is still above 5%, which keeps pressure on any company asking investors to wait years for AI spending to pay off.

The hawkish Fed hold and December hike odds

The Fed held at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday, with Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissenting in favor of a hike (Fed statement). Chair Kevin Warsh gave no forward guidance but sounded upbeat on the economy, and markets read it as hawkish. See our Fed decision recap.

After the data, Polymarket prices a 25 basis point December hike at 77.5% and no change at 20.5% (5:49 AM PT). Before the data, CME FedWatch showed about 81.8% odds of a December hike (Investing.com). A January hike sits at 30.5% on Polymarket. Strong GDP keeps the hike case alive; in-line PCE did not force it. These are market prices, not forecasts.

How the market looks before the open

This is a one-sector selloff, not a risk-off morning. As of 5:48 AM PT (Yahoo Finance): QQQ 716.56 (down 1.2%), SPY 769.21 (down 0.4%), small caps IWM 282.03 (up 0.3%). Nasdaq 100 futures were down 1.3% and S&P 500 futures down 0.4% against settlement, and VIX was 17.12. Small caps holding up while the Nasdaq slides on one megacap is our read of a stock problem, not a market panic. Our desk estimate from delayed Cboe data before the open had QQQ below its gamma flip with dealers short gamma, which tends to let moves extend in either direction. That is positioning, not a forecast.

  • 10:00 AM PT: 7-year Treasury note auction, a test for a 10-year sitting above 5%.
