Boeing slid on a delayed 737 MAX ramp, consumer confidence jumped to 91.7, and chips ran again the day before the Fed.
BOOK FACT · NOT A TICKET
As of: prices at the 1:00 PM PT close on Tue Oct 27, 2026, from TradingView (pulled 1:02 PM PT; WTI crude futures as of 1:02 PM PT). Economic data is from the TradingView calendar. Company figures are from Boeing's third quarter release and the outlets named below. This is market reporting, not investment advice.
Boeing was the biggest single-stock story of the day. The shares fell 10.7% to 168.18 at the 1:00 PM PT close, after touching 167.41, and the reason was not really the quarter. It was time. Boeing told investors its 737 MAX ramp will take longer than planned, and its cash plan for the next two years came in well below what Wall Street had penciled in. Around it, the market had a strong data morning, another chip-led rally and oil trading around $100, all one day before the Fed decision on Wednesday at 11:00 AM PT.
- Boeing (BA): down 10.7% to 168.18 at the 1:00 PM PT close. The 737 MAX rate-47 target slipped to early 2027 and free cash flow guidance came in well below consensus (Reuters, LSEG).
- Consumer confidence: 91.7 in October against about 81 expected, a big upside surprise.
- The tape: SMH up 3.02%, QQQ up 1.27%, SPY up 0.56%, while the equal-weight RSP rose only 0.11%.
- Oil: WTI crude down 1.46% at $100.27 after dipping to $99.44, with energy (XLE down 2.05%) the weakest sector fund we track.
- Next: FOMC statement Wednesday at 11:00 AM PT, the Warsh press conference at 11:30 AM PT, Microsoft and Alphabet after Wednesday's close, then GDP and PCE on Thursday.
Why is Boeing stock down today?
Because the timeline moved. CEO Kelly Ortberg told CNBC that Boeing will not reach its 737 MAX production target of 47 jets a month until early 2027, Reuters reported. The company had planned to get there this past summer. Wing production has been the bottleneck. On the earnings call, Boeing said it is now targeting 52 a month in the second half of 2027, per CNBC. Reuters also reported that Boeing will miss its goal of 500 deliveries this year.
Then came the cash. Deliveries are where Boeing gets paid, so a slower ramp means slower cash. Boeing guided to about $3 billion of free cash flow in 2027 and about $6 billion in 2028. The LSEG consensus was $5.6 billion for 2027 and $9.6 billion for 2028, per Reuters. That is well below consensus in both years. Boeing kept its target of about $10 billion in 2029, per the earnings call.
The quarter itself was mixed. The adjusted (core) loss was $0.34 a share against a $0.21 loss expected by LSEG analysts, per CNBC. Revenue rose 4% to $24.19 billion, above the $23.84 billion LSEG estimate. Seeking Alpha described the drop as an 18-month low for the stock. By the close, Boeing was down 10.7% at 168.18.
"I know everybody wants us to go faster but we're going to do it right," Ortberg told CNBC.
What was good in Boeing's Q3 report?
Plenty, which is why this reads as a timing problem more than a demand problem. From Boeing's release and CNBC:
- Net loss narrowed to $116 million from $5.34 billion a year earlier, when Boeing took a nearly $5 billion 777X charge.
- Free cash flow was $464 million, up from $238 million a year earlier, and operating cash flow was $1.5 billion.
- Defense revenue rose 15% to $7.94 billion, and the U.S. Navy selected Boeing for the F/A-XX fighter.
- Backlog grew to a record $745 billion, in Boeing's own words, including more than 6,300 commercial airplanes. It was $682 billion at the end of 2025.
- Certifications: the 737-7 received amended type certification in the quarter and the 737-10 followed in October.
The market looked past all of it. A record backlog only turns into cash when planes are delivered, and the delivery pace is what slipped.
What did consumer confidence show?
The Conference Board consumer confidence index came in at 91.7 for October, against about 81 expected and up from a revised 84.2. The Present Situation index rose to 120.4 and Expectations rose to 72.6. Twelve-month inflation expectations held at 5.8%, per Seeking Alpha.
Why it matters this week: strong confidence alongside 5.8% inflation expectations is data that does not argue for a rate cut. That is our read, not a Fed statement. Polymarket priced no change on Wednesday at 95.2% and a December hike at 76.5% as of 1:02 PM PT. Those are market prices, not forecasts. We covered the vote itself in our Fed vote count article.
Is the stock market rally broad or narrow?
Narrow, again. Chips led for a second straight day. SMH rose 3.02% and the tech sector fund XLK rose 1.71%. QQQ gained 1.27% and SPY gained 0.56% to 769.66, while the equal-weight RSP rose only 0.11%. That gap of about 0.45 percentage points between the cap-weighted and equal-weight S&P 500 funds is the tell: the biggest stocks did the lifting. Small caps did better than the equal-weight S&P, with IWM up 1.14%, so the gap is about the S&P's top weights more than company size.

Chips have been the market's swing factor all month. When Seoul's chips cracked and the S&P yawned, the index shrugged off a chip selloff; today chips carried it. Microsoft and Alphabet report after Wednesday's close, so the mega-cap weight in the index is about to be tested.
Coca-Cola (KO) beat estimates and raised its full-year outlook, per Seeking Alpha, but the stock was down 1.64% at the 1:00 PM PT close.
Did oil fall below $100 today?
Briefly. Front-month WTI crude futures touched $99.44 during the session and traded at $100.27, down 1.46%, as of 1:02 PM PT, just after the stock market close. Energy was the weakest sector: XLE fell 2.05%. The futures quote is from TradingView and is not the official settlement.

- New home sales (September): 676,000 against 650,000 expected on the TradingView calendar.
- Case-Shiller 20-city (August): up 2.7% year over year against 2.5% expected.

What was good in Boeing's Q3 report?
Boeing's net loss narrowed to $116 million from $5.34 billion a year earlier. Free cash flow was $464 million, defense revenue rose 15% and Boeing reported a record $745 billion backlog. Bottom line
Boeing's quarter had real good news in it, including a record backlog and positive free cash flow, but the stock trades on when the planes get built, and that date moved to 2027. The rest of the market rallied on chips while the average stock lagged, oil traded around $100, and a hot confidence report landed the day before the Fed. Wednesday at 11:00 AM PT is the next test.
