Twelve hours ago, futures were sliding on a blue wave. By midday Wednesday, Wall Street had decided the election was really a vote on the price of gasoline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1,515 points, or 2.9%, to about 53,302, on track for its biggest one-day gain in both points and percent since April 9, 2025 (Benzinga).

The S&P 500 rose 1.8% to about 7,701, the Nasdaq 100 gained 1.3% and the Russell 2000 added 1.5%. The Cboe Volatility Index fell to about 17.35, and the 10-year Treasury yield slipped 6 basis points to 4.90% (Benzinga). Night-session fear did not survive the morning.

Why the market is up today: the war vote

Democrats won both the House and the Senate on Tuesday (our election-night analysis). Then the vice president said the quiet part out loud. "The reason we lost is the war," JD Vance wrote on Wednesday. "The president himself said so last night" (CNBC).

Traders read that as a bigger incentive for a deal with Iran. "The elections are leading the market to conclude that Trump might now be inclined to make a deal," Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates told CNBC. Trump told the Financial Times the U.S. is "locked and loaded if we need to go, but there may be no reason for it," and Iran's parliament speaker wrote on X that American voters "said NO TO WAR" (Benzinga).

The gas-price trade

West Texas Intermediate crude was nearly 9% lower at about $87.59 a barrel by 9:36 AM PT, and Brent was down more than 9% near $94. Oil futures have now fallen more than 14% this week on hopes of a diplomatic settlement to a conflict that has disrupted energy supplies for eight months (CNBC).

Cheaper fuel is a tax cut for every driver, and the market is pricing it in by sector:

Benzinga tied the consumer rally to lower gasoline prices and the prospect of affordability measures from a Democratic Congress. Investor's Business Daily flagged Lockheed Martin and Chevron leading a selloff in defense and energy, with fresh buying in homebuilding, healthcare and apparel (IBD).

Microsoft adds $265 billion, data-center builders crack

The other half of the story is AI. Microsoft jumped 6.8%, adding about $265 billion in market value, on bets a Democratic Congress cools the AI spending race among cloud giants. The companies paid to build that race fell hard: Everus Construction dropped 23.6%, Modine 23.3%, Sterling Infrastructure 20.6%, Comfort Systems 16.4% and Quanta Services 12.8% (Benzinga).

Biggest movers outside the election

  • Amdocs (DOX) -28% after guiding fourth-quarter revenue to $975 million, well below estimates, citing a dispute with T-Mobile (Benzinga).
  • Fidelity National Information Services (FIS) -24% after a second straight cut to its full-year EPS outlook and its finance chief's exit; JPMorgan cut it to Neutral with a $38 target (Benzinga).
  • Kyndryl (KD) +36% and Duolingo (DUOL) +31% led Russell 1000 gainers on earnings (Benzinga).

Gold, silver and bitcoin join the party

Gold rose 3.3% to about $4,070 an ounce, silver jumped 4.9% to about $52.20, and bitcoin climbed about 4% back above $80,000 (Benzinga). A shrinking war premium and lower yields lifted almost everything that is not an oil well.

The data underneath

  • ISM services PMI eased to 54.5 in October from 54.9, below the 54.8 forecast. Prices paid cooled to 73 from 74 (Benzinga).
  • ADP private payrolls rose 86,000, above the 69,000 forecast (Benzinga).

If/then for the afternoon

  • If crude holds below $90 into the 1:00 PM PT close, the consumer-over-energy rotation has a real catalyst behind it, not just a one-day squeeze.
  • If Iran headlines turn hostile, the oil drop could reverse fast; CIBC's Rebecca Babin called the market "shoot first, ask questions later" mode (CNBC).
  • If the Dow closes near 1,500 points up, it books its best day since April 9, 2025. Next test: Qualcomm and Arm earnings after the bell and Thursday's weekly jobless claims.
